AI Can Make Your Marketing Faster. It Can’t Make It Better.

There is a lot of noise about AI in marketing at the moment, and most of it is unhelpful. One camp says it will replace your marketing team by next week. The other says it is all hype and best ignored. Neither is particularly helpful when you are trying to grow a business.

The truth sits somewhere in the middle.

‍AI is a genuinely useful tool. It saves time, takes the pain out of the blank page and makes routine marketing tasks easier. What it cannot do is think for you. And if you let it, it can quietly make everything you produce sound like everyone else.

‍ ‍

Where AI Genuinely Helps

AI is at its best when it speeds up work that does not need much judgement. It can help you get up to speed on a topic, summarise research, generate ideas, create a rough first draft or repurpose one piece of content into several formats. It can also take care of some of the routine jobs that would otherwise eat into your day.

The important distinction is that AI is helping you do the work. You are still directing it.

‍ ‍

The Sameness Problem

The problem starts when we expect AI to do the thinking as well as the typing. Ask it to write about leadership, customer service or business growth, and it will usually give you something perfectly reasonable. So will it for the next business. And the next one.

That is because AI works from patterns in information that already exists. So when thousands of businesses use those same tools in similar ways, the results naturally begin to look and sound alike.

You can already see it: LinkedIn posts with the same rhythm, familiar phrases appearing across websites and articles that are well written but could have been published by almost anyone.

‍ ‍

The Bigger Limitation: Human Understanding

But there is a bigger limitation. AI doesn’t have human understanding.

‍It has never sat in a meeting with your client and noticed the hesitation before they answered a question. It has not heard the frustration behind, “We’re fine with the current supplier, but...” It does not know that the problem a client first came to you with was not actually the problem you ended up solving. That knowledge comes from conversations, meetings, experience and relationships.

‍And it matters to marketing.

Knowing your audience isn’t simply knowing their industry, job title or business size. It is understanding what worries them, what they are tired of hearing, what makes them sceptical and what eventually gives them the confidence to act.

AI can help you make sense of those insights. It cannot experience them for you.

‍ ‍

Judgement Is the Part You Keep

The same is true of your business. AI can learn your services, read your website and mimic your tone of voice. But it does not carry the years of context behind why you work the way you do. It has not seen what worked, what failed, which clients were the right fit or which decisions shaped the company. That context is where judgement comes from. And judgement is what stops marketing from becoming simply more content.

None of this is an argument against using AI.

‍Quite the opposite. Used sensibly, it can make marketing considerably more efficient. Let it help with the research, the brainstorming, the first draft and the repetitive work.

But keep the parts that make your marketing worth paying attention to. The client understanding. The experience. The judgement. The point of view. The ability to recognise what matters even when nobody has said it out loud.

‍ ‍

One Question Before You Publish

Before publishing something AI has helped create, ask one simple question:

“Could one of our competitors publish this word for word?”

If the answer is yes, the AI probably hasn’t done anything wrong. It just means the human hasn’t finished the job yet.

AI can make your marketing faster. Making it better is still up to you.

Make your marketing sound like you, not everyone else.

At EWO, we help professional services firms and manufacturers market with purpose, using AI where it saves time and human judgement where it actually counts. If your marketing has started to sound like everybody else’s, that is exactly the problem we solve. Let’s put the thinking back into it and build something only your business could have produced.
